DESCENDANTS OF ARNOLD GODWIN OF JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC
BY W. DAVID GODWIN
MARCH 4, 1998

Arnold Godwin, Sr., born May 7, 1776, in North Carolina, married about 1803 to Barbary Godwin, born July 19, 1773, was given a land grant for 500 acres in the Dist. of George S.C. which was surveyed for him on August 13, 1798.  While in South Carolina, Arnold and Barbary Godwin began their family:

            Elizabeth Godwin b. December 5, 1805.
            Margaret Godwin b. March 12, 1808.
            Rhoda Godwin b. May 24, 1809.
            Arnold Godwin, Jr., b. October 26, 1810.

Between 1810 and 1815 the Arnold Godwin, Sr. family migrated to Georgia and is listed on the 1820 and 1830 U. S. Census in Wilkinson County, Georgia.  It is in this time frame daughter, Barbary Godwin, was born on January 26, 1813 and son, Rufus S. Godwin, was born on March 26, 1815.  Arnold’s wife Barbary Godwin died a few weeks after the birth of their son Rufus on April 2, 1815, at the age of 42 years.

While living in Wilkinson County, Georgia, Elizabeth Godwin married January 1, 1824, Amos Smith b. (DATE) and Margaret Godwin married March 12, 1808, Thomas L. Smith b.(DATE).

One of the first business houses in Wilkinson County was the Beall and Patterson store or trading post, established before 1820.  A ledger containing the names of 444 people was found in the loft of an Irwinton home once lived in by J. Frank Williams (Georgia Butler).  The book listed the names of all who bought goods on credit during the year 1825.  There were only an estimated 30 families living within the town limits of Irwinton at the time.  This indicated that most of the customers came from the rural district within the county.  The owners were Samuel Beall (Elizabeth Gilbert) and John Patterson who apparently sold out and moved away.  It is in this ledger that Arnold Godwin, Sr., and daughter Elizabeth (Godwin) Smith with her husband Amos Smith are found.

Interesting note, in 1825 the store consisted of 3 clerks.  With Savannah being a the major seaport, the merchandise for the store was bought in Savannah and had to be transported back to Irwinton by John and Thomas Crutchfield who were employed by the firm to operate teams between Irwinton and Savannah.  Railroads, much less trucks, did not exist at all during this period (English or American).  Two weeks were required to make the round-trip, a total of 320 miles, under normal conditions - when the streams were not high.  With the exception of rum and gin, which sold for 12 1/2 cents per pint; luxury items, such as tortoise shell combs, priced at $7.50 each for 'my lady', the stock was otherwise the basic needs for every-day living on the frontier.

Arnold Godwin, Sr., later moved and settled in Sumter Co., where he lived out the remainder of his life. It was in Sumter County, that on February 21, 1835, Rhoda Godwin married Smith Haymon (1840 census as Smith Hayman) b.(DATE), and Arnold Godwin, Jr., on December 23, 1834, married Emmaline C. Dupree, b.(abt 1809).

Children of Arnold Godwin, Jr., and Emmaline C. Dupree

            Emily J. Godwin b. abt 1838 m. (DATE) Julius C. Heague
            John R. Godwin, Sr., b. October 2, 1839 m. June 5, 1860 Elizabeth Varner
            Erasmus F. Godwin b. October 22, 1843 m. (DATE) Ellafair Godsey Walden
Eliza Jane Godwin b. abt 1843
            Arnold H. Godwin b. abt 1845

Arnold Godwin, Jr., died May 28, 1844, at the age of 33. This left his wife, Emmaline, a widow with 5 children 6 years old and younger.

Arnold Godwin, Sr., at age 84, died July 27, 1859 in Sumter Co., Georgia. His Will was probated in Sumter County Court October 12, 1859.

All three sons of Arnold Godwin, Jr. served in the Georgia Artillery 11th Battalion (Sumter Flying Artillery) Company A of the Confederate States Army.  John R. Godwin, Sr., the eldest son, was the first to enlist as a Private on July 6, 1861.  Erasmus Godwin enlisted as Private May 15, 1862 and Arnold H. Godwin enlisted February 1, 1863.  Company A, upon which the Battalion known (and widely known,) as the Cutt's Battallion, was organized and formed in Sumter County, Georgia, by Captain A. S. Cutts, who, with his command left Americus, Georgia, on the 6th day of July, 1861, for Richmond, Virginia.  It was that very day that 21 year old John R. Godwin, Sr., enlisted to fight for the South, leaving behind at home his wife of one year, Elizabeth (Varner) Godwin.

The 11th Battalion Georgia Light Artillery is recorded making Camp Cutts in Prince William County, Virginia.  This camp is located one mile east of Manassas Junction, and named in honor of Captain Allen S. Cutts of the Sumter Light Artillery.  This camp with John R. Godwin was here from July 28, 1861 till September 7, 1861.  John was later given a disabilty discharge in November 1861, after 4 months of service.

It wasn't long after returning home injured from the war that John R. Godwin and Elizabeth (Varner) Godwin started their own family for 10 months later she bore their first born child.
