In 2003 the grave of John Jacob Young was marked with a Confederate Veteran's headstone [Ken Green-Ben Young- myself and another person]. In addition to this, I had iron crosses made and erected marking the graves of but no ID [Names] Mary Horne Jones [widow] Young, wife of John J. and the two McGrady Infants buried without a name. I had them marked in July 2004.

Hi everyone,
I did a bit of checking and while I plan to continue a bit more today
I thought I would get this off to you.
Here's what we do know from the census records:
In 1850 J J Young age 35 was unmarried and living in Lee county, Dist 50, GA
In 1860 J J Young 49 was married to Louisa J. 28 and still living in Lee county GA
John Dedrick living next door (previous page) with wife Susan and possible mother in law Nancy Gray
In 1861 Victoria Jones is born to Mary and Mr Jones.
In 1870 John J Young, 60, born in Wurt, was married to Louisa 39 listed with children Martha 9, Charles 7, John H 4, and Wilherrine 2 (illegible). Friend John Diedrick 61 is living next door with wife Susan H (Gray???) Nancy Gray 86 of GA living with them.
In 1880 J.J. Young 68, is married to Mary 40, born in GA the children are listed as Martha 18, Charlie 16, John 14, Louisa 12, Alice 10, Jane 8, Susie 5, and George 5/12 born Sept
In 1900 Mary A Young is listed as either 59 or 60 born June 1840 she is a widow. She had 5 children, 3 are living. Living with her are W. M. son born Sept 1879, Casie, daughter born Sept 1881, and Alice daughter born Sept 1870 - it says she is 30, but the census was taken in June 1900.
In 1900 your Charles O Young born Feb 1864 was living as a border in the household of D. Clarence Jones born Aug 1857. when I say "married to" we assume this is the case in 1860 and 1870 because it gives no relationships. Same thing with the children, we assume these were their children.
So what does this tell us. Since John Jacob Young and his friend John Deddrick arrived here together, and we find John J Young living next door to John Dedrick/Diedrick in 1860 and 1870, I think we can safely assume we found your John Jacob Young in the census. Both times he was married to Louisa. Since Victoria Jones, born 1861, is listed as the stepdaughter of JJ Young, who is married to Mary in 1880, we know that Mary was the mother of Victoria in 1861.
The same children listed for John and Louisa are listed with John and Mary (with some additions following the 1870 census). In 1900 we find Mary, now a widow, living with 3 children: W. M. 20 son born Sept 1879, Casie 18, daughter born Sept 1881, and Allice 30, daughter born Sept 1870 .

While it says each was her child, we cannot always assume this is true since we don't know who gave the information. Alice, listed as her daughter, may have been her stepdaughter. Don't know. In 1880 we have Allice 10, Jane 8, Susie 5 and George 5/12 as the children born since the 1870 census. The 1900 census tells us that Mary had 5 children and 3 of them are still living.

We have 6 names and there may have been others that died between census records. The 1890 census burned so we have a 20 year gap. I don't know if George and W M are the same person. Census dates tend to not be terribly accurate. The 1900 census, which you'd think would be the most accurate since it gives the actual month for everyone, tends to be one of the worst.
At any rate, it doesn't look like your Charles O Young was the son of Mary Jones. I have not yet checked to see about the alleged James J Young. I also want to look into the possibility that Louisa was a sister of Susan, the wife of John Dedrick. It's a long shot, but friends and brothers often marry sisters. It would be nice if we could find a marriage record for either Louisa or Mary.
You might wonder why Mable thought Mary was the mother. Here's what I think happened. After Louisa died John married Mary and they lived as one large family. In 1900 it appears that Charles went to live with the Jones family - don't know exactly how they are related to Mary.
D. Clarence Jones could be her nephew or her son. Or it could even just be a coincidence. I'm guessing he's related to Mary. In 1900, Mary is living next door to John Young, Charles' brother. So Mary was a big influence. Over time, Louisa is not mentioned. Mary is called mother and poor Louisa slips from the family history. We'll continue to look for documents to prove or disprove this.
I've attached the 1860 census of John Dedrick. Also, I've enlarged the birthplace line for both Johns so you can possibly make out their birthplace in Germany.
